Linda Turner Hamilton was born November 3, 1953, in Washington, D.C., the
youngest of six children, born to Maurice and Elizabeth Turner. She graduated from the
Academy of Notre Dame in 1971. in the fall of that year Mrs. Hamilton entered the
University of Maryland, College Park Campus, graduating in 1975. She later entered the
Howard University School of Law in 1977 where she graduated cum laude in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Mrs. Hamilton was appointed as a judicial law clerk
in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals assigned primarily to work with Judges Walter
Yeargley, Hubert Pair and retired Chief Judge Jerard Reilly. She served in that position
from September 1980 to September 1981.
Prior to her appointment to the Superior Court bench, Mrs. Hamilton served in the
United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia where she began in 1981.
As an Assistant United States Attorney, she served in all of the sections within the
Superior Court Division--the Misdemeanor Trial Section, the Grand Jury Section, and the
Felony Trial II Section. She also served in the office’s Appellate Division. In March 1985
she was selected to serve as a trial assistant in the Chronic Offender Unit, specializing in the
prosecution of violent and dangerous offenders, and in April 1986, she was selected to
serve in the Felony I Section which was then responsible for the prosecution of child sex
offenses, cases of rape and first-degree murder. She earned Special Achievement Awards
for years 1986 and 1987 specifically for her trial work in those Units. In 1987, she joined the
supervisory ranks of the United States Attorney’s Office. First she was promoted to
Deputy Chief of the Felony Trial Section. Later in 1987 she was promoted to Chief of the
Chronic Offender Unit which is handled on the Superior Court’s Accelerated Felony Trial
Calender. Mrs. Hamilton served as Chief of the Unite for two yeas. In October 1989, she
was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief of the Superior Court Division. In that
position she was actively involved in the revisions of the Criminal Jury Instructions
“Redbook” in conjunction with the Bar, the Court and the Public Defenders Service.
Mrs. Hamilton has participated in continuing legal education programs such as the
Criminal Practice Institute, serving first as lecturer in 1985 and then as co-chairperson for
years 1986 1987, and 1988. In addition, she has been active in various community based
programs such as Drug Awareness Programs as well as an “Adopt a School Program.”
Mrs. Hamilton along with her husband work with designated students from the Richardson
Elementary School located in Northeast, Washington, in an effort to support and encourage
impoverished young students. Additionally, she was awarded a community service award
by the Logan Circle Community Association.
She is married to Richard Alonzo Hamilton and has a daughter, Jennifer, age eleven.
